Metric, Imperial and US customary units

The metric system (SI) scales every unit by powers of ten and underpins all modern definitions — since 1959 even the inch, foot, yard, mile and pound are defined exactly in metric terms. “Imperial” and “US customary” are often treated as one system, but they are not universally identical: lengths and weights match, while volumes differ materially. The Imperial gallon (4.54609 L) is about 20% larger than the US gallon (3.785411784 L), Imperial pints beat US pints, and — counterintuitively — the US fluid ounce is slightly larger than the Imperial one. Any unlabeled “gallon” or “fluid ounce” is therefore ambiguous, which is why this calculator asks instead of guessing.

Exact and approximate conversions

Whether a conversion is exact is a property of the definition, not of how many decimals you see. 1 in = 2.54 cm terminates quickly and is exact; 1 m = 3.280839895… ft has endless decimals yet is equally exact, because both derive from the same exact definition. Conventional values (the 4.184 J calorie, 9.80665 m/s² standard gravity, the 365.25-day Julian year) are exact by agreement. Genuinely approximate factors exist only where a unit rests on a measured constant, like the dalton — and no number of stored digits makes those exact. The calculator labels every result with the correct category.

How conversion factors work

Most conversions are a single multiplication: the value is multiplied by the source unit's factor to reach the quantity's canonical base (meters, kilograms, seconds…), then divided by the target unit's factor. Two families break the simple-multiplier rule. Temperature is affine — °F = °C × 9/5 + 32 — because the scales start at different zeros. Fuel consumption is reciprocal — L/100 km = 235.215 ÷ mpg (US) — because one measures distance per fuel and the other fuel per distance, so halving one doubles the other.

Common conversion mistakes

A short history

The meter began in 1795 as one ten-millionth of the pole-to-equator distance and is now defined by the speed of light; the kilogram shed its physical prototype in 2019 for a definition via the Planck constant. The 1959 international yard-and-pound agreement ended centuries of slightly different national inches by fixing 1 yd = 0.9144 m and 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg exactly — the reason today's US and UK lengths agree while their older, separately standardized volume measures still differ.

Frequently asked questions

How many ounces are in a pound?

Exactly 16. Both units are defined against the kilogram by the 1959 International Yard and Pound Agreement — the pound as 453.59237 g and the ounce as one sixteenth of that, 28.349523125 g — so the 16 is a definition with no rounding in it.

Why does a gold ounce not match?

Because it is a troy ounce, 31.1034768 g, about 10% heavier than the avoirdupois ounce this page uses. A troy pound holds 12 troy ounces rather than 16, so it comes to 373.24 g against the ordinary pound's 453.59 — lighter overall despite the heavier ounces.

Is a fluid ounce the same as an ounce?

No. A fluid ounce measures volume and an ounce measures mass, and the number connecting them is the density of whatever is in the container. Water is the near-coincidence that causes the confusion: a US fluid ounce of it weighs about 1.04 avoirdupois ounces. Nothing else is that close.

How do I write 40 ounces as pounds and ounces?

Divide by 16 and keep the remainder: 40 ÷ 16 is 2 remainder 8, so 40 oz is 2 lb 8 oz. Going the other way, multiply the pounds by 16 and add the ounces — 3 lb 4 oz is 52 oz.

Do UK and US ounces differ?

Not for mass. The avoirdupois ounce has been identical in both since 1959. Fluid ounces are a different story: the UK fluid ounce is about 28.41 ml and the US one about 29.57 ml, which is a real 4% difference and a genuine source of ruined recipes.

Why do baby weights use pounds and ounces?

Because the resolution is right. A newborn changes by a few ounces at a time, and an ounce is about 28 g — fine enough to be meaningful and coarse enough to be memorable. A decimal pound would put the same information behind two decimal places that nobody reads aloud.
