Metric, Imperial and US customary units

The metric system (SI) scales every unit by powers of ten and underpins all modern definitions — since 1959 even the inch, foot, yard, mile and pound are defined exactly in metric terms. “Imperial” and “US customary” are often treated as one system, but they are not universally identical: lengths and weights match, while volumes differ materially. Exact and approximate conversions

Whether a conversion is exact is a property of the definition, not of how many decimals you see. 1 in = 2.54 cm terminates quickly and is exact; 1 m = 3.280839895… ft has endless decimals yet is equally exact, because both derive from the same exact definition.
