Metric, Imperial and US customary units

The metric system (SI) scales every unit by powers of ten and underpins all modern definitions — since 1959 even the inch, foot, yard, mile and pound are defined exactly in metric terms. “Imperial” and “US customary” are often treated as one system, but they are not universally identical: lengths and weights match, while volumes differ materially. The Imperial gallon (4.54609 L) is about 20% larger than the US gallon (3.785411784 L), Imperial pints beat US pints, and — counterintuitively — the US fluid ounce is slightly larger than the Imperial one. Any unlabeled “gallon” or “fluid ounce” is therefore ambiguous, which is why this calculator asks instead of guessing.

Exact and approximate conversions

Whether a conversion is exact is a property of the definition, not of how many decimals you see. 1 in = 2.54 cm terminates quickly and is exact; 1 m = 3.280839895… ft has endless decimals yet is equally exact, because both derive from the same exact definition. Conventional values (the 4.184 J calorie, 9.80665 m/s² standard gravity, the 365.25-day Julian year) are exact by agreement. Genuinely approximate factors exist only where a unit rests on a measured constant, like the dalton — and no number of stored digits makes those exact. The calculator labels every result with the correct category.

How conversion factors work

Most conversions are a single multiplication: the value is multiplied by the source unit's factor to reach the quantity's canonical base (meters, kilograms, seconds…), then divided by the target unit's factor. Two families break the simple-multiplier rule. Temperature is affine — °F = °C × 9/5 + 32 — because the scales start at different zeros. Fuel consumption is reciprocal — L/100 km = 235.215 ÷ mpg (US) — because one measures distance per fuel and the other fuel per distance, so halving one doubles the other.

A short history

The meter began in 1795 as one ten-millionth of the pole-to-equator distance and is now defined by the speed of light; the kilogram shed its physical prototype in 2019 for a definition via the Planck constant. The 1959 international yard-and-pound agreement ended centuries of slightly different national inches by fixing 1 yd = 0.9144 m and 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg exactly — the reason today's US and UK lengths agree while their older, separately standardized volume measures still differ.

Frequently asked questions

How many grams are in a pound?

453.59237 grams, exactly. It is not a rounded measurement — the 1959 International Yard and Pound Agreement defined the pound as that number of grams, so the digits terminate there and every one of them is exact.

Is 454 grams close enough?

For cooking, yes: the error is under a tenth of a percent, far below what a kitchen scale resolves. For anything priced or regulated by weight it is not, because the rounding always runs the same direction and accumulates. A shipment of a thousand one-pound items comes out 408 grams heavy on the 454 approximation.

Why does my gold weight not convert correctly?

Precious metals are weighed in troy ounces, not avoirdupois ones. A troy ounce is 31.1034768 g against the ordinary ounce's 28.349523125 g, and a troy pound has 12 of them rather than 16 — so a troy pound is 373.24 g where an ordinary pound is 453.59. Converting a gold weight with the everyday factor overstates it by about 21%.

How do I get pounds and ounces instead of a decimal?

Take the whole number of pounds, then multiply what is left by 16. 0.5512 lb is 0 lb and 0.5512 × 16 = 8.8 oz. The equivalents table below does this for you — it reads the same mass in ounces directly, so you can pair the whole pounds with the remainder without doing the arithmetic twice.

Can I convert grams to fluid ounces here?

No, and nothing can without knowing what the substance is. A fluid ounce measures volume and a gram measures mass; the bridge between them is density, which differs for every ingredient. Water happens to sit near 29.6 g per US fluid ounce, which is why the two get confused, but flour is nearer 15 g and honey nearer 42 g for the same volume.

Is a UK pound the same as a US pound?

Yes. That is exactly what the 1959 agreement settled: before it, the US and Imperial pounds differed in the last few digits, and six countries adopted the single 453.59237 g definition to end the discrepancy. A pound in a British recipe and a pound on an American scale are now the same mass.
