Millilitres times density gives grams, and grams divided by 453.59237 gives pounds. That divisor is the international pound, exact by agreement since 1959, so it introduces nothing. Every difference between one answer and another on this page comes from the density in the middle.
The Formula
Mass and volume through density
ρ is the density of the substance you choose, in grams per millilitre. It is a measured property, not a constant: water is 0.998 g/mL at 20 °C, olive oil 0.913, honey 1.43. Unit definitions on both sides are exact (1 lb = 0.45359237 kg, 1 US gallon = 231 in³), so every uncertainty in the answer comes from the density and none from the units.
Worked Example
500 mL of water is 1.1018 lb. 500 mL of whole milk is 1.1367. 500 mL of olive oil is 1.0063 — almost exactly a pound, by coincidence rather than design. 500 mL of honey is 1.5763, half again as heavy as the water.
Key Insight
Small volumes are where a wrong density hides best. A ten percent error on 500 mL of something is about 0.1 lb, which looks like rounding and is not — it is the difference between olive oil and milk. Scaled up to a pallet, the same proportional error is hundreds of pounds and a rejected shipment. The reverse direction has its own trap. "How many mL in a pound" is asking for a volume, and the answer for water — 453.6 mL — is close enough to half a litre that people remember it as half a litre. For honey it is 317 mL, which is not close to anything memorable.

- Jet fuel is defined by ASTM D1655 and DEF STAN 91-091 as a spec band rather than a value, and neither standard is readable without paying for it. An aviation figure taken from a converter site would not be a source.
- USDA states no temperature for the food densities. That is shown on the page rather than replaced with a plausible 20 °C.

- Water is offered at two temperatures because the difference is the reason '1 g/mL' and '998 g/L' are both correct. At 20 °C a US gallon of water is 8.33 lb; at 4 °C, its densest, it is 8.35.
