A kilogram of water fills 0.2646 US gallons. A kilogram of honey fills 0.1847 — thirty percent less, for the same mass. This pairing shows up wherever something is bought by weight and stored or shipped by volume: chemicals, fuels, food ingredients in bulk. In all of those the density is a known property of the product, usually printed on the safety data sheet. The trouble is that a converter which does not ask will use water's, and water is one of the denser ordinary liquids.

How This Calculator Works

Divide kilograms by the density in kilograms per litre to get litres, then divide by 3.785411784 to get US gallons. The gallon is exactly 231 cubic inches and the inch is exactly 25.4 millimetres, so that second step carries no uncertainty at all.

The Formula

Mass and volume through density

m = ρV, so V = m ÷ ρ

ρ is the density of the substance you choose, in grams per millilitre. It is a measured property, not a constant: water is 0.998 g/mL at 20 °C, olive oil 0.913, honey 1.43. Unit definitions on both sides are exact (1 lb = 0.45359237 kg, 1 US gallon = 231 in³), so every uncertainty in the answer comes from the density and none from the units.

Worked Example

A 200 kg drum of water is 52.9 US gallons. The same 200 kg of olive oil is 57.9 gallons, which will not fit a 55-gallon drum. That is the kind of error this conversion exists to prevent, and it comes entirely from assuming a density rather than looking one up.

Key Insight

Tank and drum sizing is the place where substituting water quietly costs money. Standard drums are sized in gallons and product is often priced per kilogram, so the question "how many drums" is exactly this conversion — and using water's density understates the volume for anything lighter, which is most organic liquids. The US gallon is also not the imperial one: 3.785 litres against 4.546, a twenty percent difference. A specification quoting gallons without saying which is ambiguous by more than the density spread between water and olive oil.

  • Jet fuel is defined by ASTM D1655 and DEF STAN 91-091 as a spec band rather than a value, and neither standard is readable without paying for it. An aviation figure taken from a converter site would not be a source.
  • USDA states no temperature for the food densities. That is shown on the page rather than replaced with a plausible 20 °C.
