How This Calculator Works

Enter the number and pick the two units. Because the millilitre is shared, the conversion never touches the volume: it moves the decimal point three places. Going from pg/mL to ng/mL divides by 1000, so the number gets smaller; going the other way multiplies by 1000. The panel also shows the same concentration in g/L, mg/L and µg/L, which is useful when a report mixes bases.

The Formula

m and v are the base-10 exponents of the mass and volume SI prefixes of each unit. No density and no substance enter the calculation: the substance cancels between the two numerators, so 1 µg/mL is 1 mg/L for every solute in every solvent.

Worked Example

A testosterone result of 250 pg/mL is 0.25 ng/mL. The value did not change — 250 picograms and 0.25 nanograms are the same mass — but a report that lists the reference range in ng/mL puts 0.25 next to it, where 250 looked alarming and was not.

Key Insight

Mistaking one for the other is a thousandfold error, and it is easy to make because the two read almost identically at a glance. The tell is which way the number should move: converting to a LARGER unit always gives a SMALLER number. If picograms became nanograms and the figure grew, the factor was applied upside down.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is pg/mL bigger or smaller than ng/mL?

Smaller, by a factor of exactly 1000. A picogram is 10^-12 grams and a nanogram is 10^-9, so it takes a thousand picograms to make one nanogram. The volume is the same millilitre on both sides and plays no part.

How do I convert pg/mL to ng/mL?

Divide by 1000, or move the decimal point three places left. 250 pg/mL is 0.25 ng/mL, 1500 pg/mL is 1.5 ng/mL.

Why do lab reports use different units for the same analyte?

Because the convenient unit depends on the concentration. Hormones present at a few nanograms per millilitre read as awkward decimals in ng/mL and as tidy whole numbers in pg/mL, so different assays pick different bases. The underlying quantity is the same.

Can I compare my result to a range printed in the other unit?

Convert first, then compare — but only within the same assay. A reference range belongs to the method that produced it, and two platforms measuring the same hormone can disagree by more than this conversion shifts the digits.

Does the substance matter for this conversion?

No. The solute appears in the numerator of both units and cancels. That is what separates this from a mass-to-volume conversion, where a density is required and the substance decides the answer.

What about pmol/L and nmol/L?

Those are molar, not mass-based, and are not reachable from here. Crossing to a molar basis needs the molar mass of the specific analyte — a property of the substance rather than of the units — so it is a different calculation with a different input.

Both units carry the same volume — one millilitre — so the volume cancels and nothing about the sample or its density enters. What is left is the step between two SI prefixes: pico is 10^-12 and nano is 10^-9, three orders apart, so the factor is exactly 1000 in one direction and 0.001 in the other. The factor is derived from the prefix exponents at run time rather than stored as a constant, which is why it is exact and not a rounded table value.
