Where a prefix conversion moves the decimal by threes, this one moves it by one: the microgram is unchanged and only the volume basis differs, and a decilitre is a tenth of a litre. m and v are the base-10 exponents of the mass and volume SI prefixes of each unit. No density and no substance enter the calculation: the substance cancels between the two numerators, so 1 µg/mL is 1 mg/L for every solute in every solvent.

A blood lead result of 3.5 µg/dL is 35 µg/L. Both describe the identical sample; the second simply counts the micrograms in a full litre instead of a tenth of one. Environmental limits for lead in water are quoted per litre and clinical results per decilitre, and the factor between those two worlds is this ten.

Key Insight

The decilitre is the part that surprises people, because it appears almost nowhere outside the laboratory. A decilitre is 100 mL — the volume of a small espresso — and it survives in clinical reporting because it makes typical blood concentrations land on readable numbers. When a conversion between per-decilitre and per-litre looks wrong, it is nearly always because the factor of 10 was applied in the direction that made the number smaller.

What does µg/dL mean?

Micrograms per decilitre: the mass of dissolved substance, counted in millionths of a gram, present in one decilitre — 100 millilitres — of solution. It is a concentration, so it says how crowded the solute is, not how much of it there is in total.

How many µg/L is 1 µg/dL?

10 µg/L. A litre holds ten decilitres, so the same concentration expressed per litre counts ten times as many micrograms.

Is µg/dL the same as mcg/dL?

Yes. mcg is a plain-text spelling of the microgram symbol µg, used where the Greek letter is awkward to type or risks being mangled in printing. The unit and the number are identical.

Why is a decilitre used at all?

Convention, and readability. Many clinical analytes sit at concentrations that produce convenient one- and two-digit numbers per decilitre and awkward ones per litre. The decilitre has largely disappeared from everyday measurement but persists in laboratory medicine for that reason.

Can I convert µg/dL to µmol/L?

Not from the units alone. Molar units count particles rather than mass, so the crossing needs the molar mass of the specific analyte — lead, cortisol and iron each give a different factor. That makes it a substance calculation rather than a unit conversion.

Does the density of blood affect this?

No. Both units are a mass over a volume of the same solution, so the solution itself cancels. Density only enters when converting between a mass and a volume, which is a different kind of conversion entirely.

The prefix on the gram is the same microgram on both sides, so unlike a prefix conversion nothing moves in the numerator. What changes is the volume basis: a decilitre is one tenth of a litre, so the same mass spread over ten times the volume is ten times the number of micrograms per litre. The factor is 10 exactly, derived at run time from the volume exponents rather than stored, and no density or substance property is involved because the solute cancels between numerator and numerator.
