How it works
Five modes total. Course planner (the default) lets you enter each category and assignment, apply drop-lowest and cap rules, and project conservative/expected/stretch outcomes for the remaining work. Single score turns points earned and points possible into a percentage and a letter. Weighted course averages categories or assignments by their weights, in percentages or letter grades. Points-based course pools every points-earned / points-possible pair into one course percentage. Final grade target works backward from your current grade and goal to the score the remaining work must clear. Results update as you type and show the formula, the numbers substituted in, the steps, and a plain-English reading.
A 43 out of 50 is 86% — a B on the default scale, 7 points and 14% short of full marks. Switch to Weighted course and enter 85 at weight 20, 78 at weight 30, and 92 at weight 50, and the normalized course average is 86.4%, also a B.

Every percentage result is mapped to a letter through the scale you set under “Customize letter-grade scale”. Letter grades are averaged as a 4.0-scale GPA and reported as the nearest approximate letter.
Course Planner — how the calculation works
The Course planner processes each category in five steps before aggregating across the course.
- Validate assignments — Blank rows (all fields empty) are skipped. A row with a name but no possible points, an earned value with no possible, a non-numeric or non-positive possible, a negative earned value, or a non-numeric earned value all produce a labeled error. A row where earned exceeds possible is counted as extra credit and is never capped at the assignment level.
- Drop lowest — If Drop lowest N is set for a category, the N graded assignments with the lowest earned/possible percentage are removed from that category's calculation. If N equals or exceeds the count of graded assignments, all but the single best-scored assignment are dropped.
- Apply cap — If Cap % is set for a category, the category percentage after drop is capped at that value. The cap is applied after drop-lowest so dropped scores cannot inflate the cap threshold.
- Project ungraded assignments — Assignments with no earned value are treated as scoring at the chosen scenario percentage (conservative, expected, or stretch). Projections are computed for all three scenarios simultaneously.
- Aggregate — Points-based method: sums all effective earned points and all possible points across all categories, then computes the percentage. Weighted method: computes each category's percentage (after drop and cap), then takes the weighted average normalized over the total weight entered — weights do not need to sum to 100.
Supported by the Course planner: Drop lowest (per category), Cap % (per category), Extra credit (earned > possible, never capped at assignment level).
Not supported by the public UI: Curves (grade adjusted relative to class distribution), Grade replacement or forgiveness policies, LMS-specific rules (Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle automatic policies), Institutional policies not expressible as drop/cap.

Example U.S. grading scale (10-point, plus/minus)
An example scale, not a national standard. The broad cutoffs — A 90-100, B 80-89, C 70-79, D 60-69, F <60 — are the common U.S. convention (and NCES's transcript standardization), but the exact plus/minus percentages and GPA points below vary by institution. Some schools use 7- or 8-point scales, or omit certain plus/minus grades.

Grade points are the typical 4.0 scale; plus/minus GPA values are institution-specific (e.g. Stanford uses a 4.3 scale where A+ = 4.3). Honors/AP courses often add 0.5-1.0 to GPA points (up to a 5.0 scale). Some institutions omit certain plus/minus grades (no A+ or D−). Always verify the actual scale on the institution's grade-conversion policy page.
Weighted grading — when categories matter more than their point counts
Many U.S. college and high school courses use weighted-category grading. A syllabus might specify: 20% homework + 30% midterms + 50% final exam. Even if homework has 500 total points and the final has 100 points, the final contributes more to the grade because its weight is higher. Mis-calculating weighted grades is a common reason students under- or over-estimate their standing mid-semester.
The correct method: compute the percentage in each category separately (homework points earned / homework points possible), multiply by category weight, sum across categories. Example: 85% in homework × 20% = 17.0 points; 78% in midterms × 30% = 23.4 points; 92% in final × 50% = 46.0 points; total weighted grade = 86.4%.
Common error: averaging category percentages without weighting (85+78+92)/3 = 85.0%. This produces a different (lower in the example) result because it ignores that the final exam matters more. Some learning management systems (Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle) automate weighted grade calculation correctly when the syllabus weights are entered into the system — but students should verify the system matches the syllabus.
Grade projection — what do I need on the final to get a B?
A common student question: 'I have 78% going into the final. What do I need on the final to get a B (80% overall)?' The math depends on the final's weight. If the final is 30% of grade and current grade is from work worth 70% of total: required final score = (target_overall − current_weighted) / final_weight = (80 − 78×0.7) / 0.3 = (80 − 54.6) / 0.3 = 25.4 / 0.3 = 84.7%.
The general projection formula: required_final = (target − current_pct × completed_weight) / remaining_weight. Some online grade calculators automate this; the key insight is that the answer scales inversely with the remaining weight. If the final is only 10% of total, recovery from a low going-in grade is nearly impossible; if the final is 50%, recovery is much more feasible.
Strategic implication for students: front-loading effort makes sense in courses with heavy final weight (math/science with high-stakes exams), while distributed effort makes sense in courses with even category weights (essay-heavy humanities courses). Knowing the weighting structure before the term begins is the most important step in semester planning.
How a single low-weight assignment nudges the final grade
A frequent surprise is how little a bombed low-weight assignment actually costs. Suppose homework is 10% of the course grade and you score 40% on one homework worth a quarter of that category. If your homework average would otherwise be 90%, that single zero-ish score might drag the category to roughly 78%, but because homework is only 10% of the total, the hit to the overall grade is about 1.2 percentage points — a 91% becomes roughly 89.8%. Weight, not raw point loss, sets the damage.
Contrast that with an unweighted (points-based) scheme, where every point counts equally toward one big denominator. There, a 0 on a 200-point project inside a 1,000-point course removes a fifth of your possible total in one stroke, a far heavier blow than the same project would deal at a 20% weight. Before panicking over one bad grade, identify whether the course is weighted or unweighted and locate the assignment's slice: in a weighted course a low-weight miss is recoverable, while in a points course a large-point miss is structurally hard to undo.
Key insight
A percentage is universal; the letter it maps to is not. Cutoffs, plus/minus bands, and GPA values differ between schools and even instructors, so the customizable scale — plus the Course planner's drop-lowest and cap options, and the reminder that curves and grade-replacement rules are not modeled here — matters as much as the arithmetic.
FAQ
How do I choose between weighted and points-based grading?
Use weighted course when your syllabus assigns each category a percentage of the grade (for example homework 20%, midterm 30%, final 50%) — the weights, not the raw point totals, decide the outcome. Use points-based course when everything counts toward one running point total and a big assignment simply carries more points. If the syllabus lists weights, it's weighted; if it lists point values, it's points-based.
Do the category weights have to add up to 100?
No. The weighted-percentage mode always reports a normalized average — Σ(grade × weight) ÷ Σ(weight) — so it is correct even mid-semester when only part of the course is graded. It also shows the total weight entered and flags any unallocated weight (under 100) or excess (over 100), so you can tell a normalized average apart from the points already earned across the full course.
How do I calculate the score I need on the final?
Switch to Final grade target and enter your current grade, the overall grade you're aiming for, and the final's share of the course (its remaining weight). The tool returns required score = (target − current × completed weight ÷ 100) ÷ (remaining weight ÷ 100) and tells you whether the target is already secured, reachable without extra credit, or only reachable with extra credit or a policy change.
How are letter grades handled?
In the weighted course mode you can enter letter grades instead of percentages. Each letter is converted to a 4.0-scale GPA (A and A+ = 4.0, A− = 3.7, down to F = 0.0), averaged by weight, and reported as a weighted GPA plus the nearest approximate letter. Because GPA maps differ by institution, treat the letter as an approximation.
Can extra credit push a grade above 100%?
Yes, and it is never capped. A single score above the maximum (for example 105 out of 100) reports over 100% and counts the surplus as extra-credit points; a required final score above 100% is labeled as needing extra credit or a grading-policy change rather than hidden.
What letter grade is my percentage?
It depends on the scale. The default here is a common U.S. plus/minus scale (A in the 90s, B in the 80s, C in the 70s, with plus/minus bands), but you can open “Customize letter-grade scale” and set each threshold to match your syllabus. Every percentage result then maps through your scale.
Does the Course planner support drop-lowest and category caps?
Yes. In the Course planner you can set Drop lowest N per category and a Cap % per category. Drop lowest removes the N graded assignments with the lowest earned/possible percentage from that category (always keeping at least one), then Cap % caps the resulting category percentage. Extra credit (earned > possible) is accepted at the assignment level and is only limited when a category cap applies to the aggregated category percentage.
When might the result not match my school's system?
When the course is graded on a curve, uses grade-replacement or forgiveness policies, relies on LMS-specific rules (Canvas, Blackboard or Moodle automatic policies), or applies a non-standard scale or GPA map. The Course planner does model drop-lowest and category caps directly. For everything else the math assumes straight point-counting against the scale you set — always check the syllabus or registrar before acting on a letter or GPA.
