What your result means

Enter your vehicle costs for a period and the distance driven in that same period. The engine separates variable costs (energy, maintenance, tyres and the mileage-related share of depreciation) from fixed costs (insurance, registration, the time-related share of depreciation and financing or lease costs), then reports fuel, marginal, all-in and cash-flow cost per mile. Owned vehicles use depreciation and interest; leased vehicles use lease payments instead — the two are never mixed. A confidence score grades how much rests on real records versus estimates.

A gasoline car driven 12,000 miles a year at 30 MPG on $3.50 fuel, with $1,180 of maintenance and tyres, $2,060 of insurance and registration, $3,200 of depreciation and $600 of interest, works out to about $0.70 all-in per mile — but only about $0.12 in fuel and about $0.35 marginal. Use the fuel number for consumption, the marginal number for a one-off trip, the all-in number for affordability, and the cash-flow number for budgeting.

The four costs per mile — and the decision each one answers

Fuel or energy cost per mile is what the energy alone costs: distance divided by MPG times the price per gallon for liquid fuel, or distance times kWh per 100 miles divided by 100 times the price per kWh (plus charging loss) for electricity. It answers 'how much does the driving itself consume?' and nothing else — it excludes every fixed and ownership cost.

Marginal cost per mile is the variable cost of one more mile: energy plus maintenance, repairs, tyres, oil and the mileage-related share of depreciation. This is the correct number for a marginal decision such as whether to drive to the next town or take the train, because insurance, registration and time-based depreciation are already paid whether the car moves or not.

All-in cost per mile is the full economic cost: marginal cost plus insurance, registration, the time-related share of depreciation and, for an owned vehicle, financing interest. It is the correct number for affordability and ownership decisions. Cash-flow cost per mile is different again — it excludes non-cash depreciation and includes the loan principal you actually repay, so it tracks the cash leaving your account for month-to-month budgeting.

Fixed versus variable costs — why your per-mile number falls as you drive more

Fixed costs — insurance, registration, licence, and the time-based share of depreciation — accrue whether the car sits in the driveway or crosses the country. Variable costs — fuel, tyre wear, oil and brake maintenance, and the mileage-based share of depreciation — accrue only when the wheels turn. Divide a single annual total by miles driven and the fixed component spreads thinner the more you drive, which is why a car driven 3,000 miles a year can show a per-mile cost above $2.00 while the identical car driven 25,000 miles shows under $0.60.

This is why the mileage-sensitivity curve matters more than any single figure. As annual mileage rises the fixed cost per mile falls and the total annual cost rises, while the marginal cost per mile stays constant. A common error is to quote one all-in number as if it were universal; your real number depends on how far you drive.

Owned versus leased, and why principal and depreciation never mix

For an owned vehicle the economic cost of the metal is its depreciation — the value it loses — plus the interest on any loan. The loan principal is not an economic cost: it is the cash repayment of money you borrowed, and the value it bought is already captured by depreciation. Counting both principal and depreciation in one number double-counts the vehicle. So all-in economic cost uses depreciation and interest; cash-flow cost uses interest and principal and drops the non-cash depreciation.

For a leased vehicle there is no depreciation to you and no principal — the lease payment already bundles the vehicle's value loss, financing and the lessor's margin. All-in and cash-flow cost therefore use lease upfront, payments and fees, and depreciation is zero. Mixing owned depreciation with lease payments, or entering both for one vehicle, is a modelling error the calculator flags.

IRS standard mileage rate vs actual cost — which to use

The IRS publishes annual optional standard mileage rates for tax purposes. For 2026 (Notice 2026-10) the rates are $0.725/mile for business use, $0.205/mile for medical or moving (moving is deductible only for active-duty Armed Forces), and $0.14/mile for charitable use. A taxpayer using a personal vehicle for business may deduct the business rate times business miles, or deduct actual expenses prorated by business-use percentage. Which deducts more is empirical — run both.

Whether you may use the standard rate depends on whether the vehicle is owned or leased and on prior elections, and the rate excludes parking, tolls and business-purpose interest, which are deductible separately. This calculator's business module compares your actual per-mile cost against a reimbursement rate for planning; it is not a tax-filing tool, and the IRS figure is shown as a benchmark, not your personal cost.

Worked example and key insight

The single most common mistake is judging a marginal decision — 'should I drive to the next town?' — with the all-in number, which counts insurance and depreciation you have already paid. That makes people skip worthwhile short trips. Match the metric to the decision and the number stops lying to you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which of the four cost-per-mile numbers should I use?

Fuel or energy cost for how much a mile of driving consumes; marginal cost for whether to make one extra trip; all-in cost for whether you can afford the vehicle; and cash-flow cost for month-to-month budgeting. Using the all-in figure for a single trip overstates its true cost, often by two to three times.

Why is all-in cost per mile so much higher than fuel cost?

Fuel is only one slice. Depreciation is usually the largest single cost of driving, and insurance, registration, maintenance and financing add more still. All-in cost counts every one of them; fuel cost counts none but the energy.

How does the calculator handle depreciation?

Enter the value lost over the period directly, or a start and end value and it takes the difference. It then splits that depreciation into a mileage-related share (variable) and a time-related share (fixed), which always add back to the total. Leased vehicles depreciate nothing here and use lease payments instead.

Why are loan principal and depreciation never counted together?

Depreciation is the economic value your vehicle loses; loan principal is cash you repay. Counting both would double-count the vehicle. All-in economic cost uses depreciation and interest; cash-flow cost uses interest and the principal actually paid, excluding non-cash depreciation.

Is an EV always cheaper per mile than a gas car?

This is a driving-cost decision engine, not a single total-divided-by-distance ratio. From your costs and the distance driven it derives four DISTINCT per-mile numbers that answer four different questions. Fuel or energy cost per mile is the energy alone: for gas, diesel and hybrid it is distance ÷ MPG × price per gallon; for an EV it is distance × kWh per 100 miles ÷ 100 × price per kWh × (1 + charging loss); a PHEV splits electric and fuel miles by the electric-miles share, and a manual override replaces the computed figure so no energy category is ever counted twice.
